Polypropylene Fiber vs Steel Fiber Technical Comparison

2026/07/28 14:49

Steel fiber and polypropylene (PP macro fiber,PP micro fiber) fiber are the two most widely used reinforcing additives for concrete. Many  purchasers struggle to select the right fiber due to unclear differences in performance, cost and applicable scenarios.

Steel fiber features high tensile strength and hooked-end design, which forms strong mechanical bonding with concrete. It greatly improves concrete’s flexural resistance, impact resistance and fatigue resistance.

PP fiber is a lightweight, chemically stable synthetic fiber. It cannot provide strong structural bearing capacity, but it can solve the most common construction problem: early shrinkage cracking.

Steel fiber requires strict mixing procedures. Wrong feeding order easily causes fiber balling and affects pouring quality. Due to heavy dosage, overall material and transportation costs are higher.

Polypropylene fiber (pp macro fiber or pp micro fiber) is construction-friendly. It disperses easily, requires no complicated operation, and significantly reduces total project cost with ultra-low mixing dosage.

Application Selection Guide

Choose Steel Fiber If Your Project:

◆Needs heavy load bearing (factory floors, warehouse yards)

Requires impact and explosion resistance

Tunnel shotcrete, slope support, bridge and UHPC components

Indoor projects without corrosive substances

Choose Polypropylene Fiber If Your Project:

Focuses on anti-cracking, waterproof and anti-shrinkage performance

Roofs, basements, reservoirs, swimming pools

Coastal, chemical plant, salt-rich corrosive environments

Ordinary roads, ,Industrial floor rdecorative concrete and wall plastering

Budget-sensitive general construction projects
