Basalt Fiber Rebar Used in Coastal Bridge Project

Basalt fiber has properties similar to carbon fiber, is less expensive than carbon fiber, and has superior comprehensive performance compared to glass fiber. It is widely used in high-end manufacturing, energy conservation and environmental protection, infrastructure reinforcement, and used in coastal bridage project.

Coastal bridges face severe corrosion challenges due to saltwater, high humidity, and frequent extreme weather, which often shortens the service life of traditional steel rebar and increases maintenance costs. This case study highlights the successful application of Basalt Fiber Reinforced Polymer (BFRP) rebar in a coastal bridge project, solving long-standing corrosion issues and enhancing structural durability.

The project, located in a coastal area prone to hurricanes and salt spray, required a corrosion-resistant reinforcement solution to replace steel rebar, which had previously suffered from rust-induced spalling and structural degradation. Our BFRP rebar was selected for its exceptional corrosion resistance, high tensile strength, and lightweight properties—critical for coastal infrastructure.

During construction, BFRP rebar was used in concrete piles, girders, and deck slabs, replacing traditional steel entirely. Its non-corrosive nature eliminates rust risks from saltwater and chemical exposure, while its tensile strength exceeds that of steel rebar, ensuring structural stability. Additionally, its lightweight design simplified transportation and installation, reducing construction time and labor costs.

Post-installation monitoring shows the BFRP-reinforced bridge maintains structural integrity with zero corrosion, extended the service life and reduced maintenance  costs.This case proves basalt fiber reinforced polymer rebar is a reliable, cost-effective solution for coastal bridges, addressing corrosion challenges while promoting sustainable, low-maintenance infrastructure.
