Application Case of 3D Geomat in River Ecological Restoration Project

3D geomat has mainly been used in highway,railway,embankment ,hillside,etc.An example of the application of 3d geomat in river ecological restoration projects is as follows:

The 100km Midstream Demonstration Section of Fen River (Qingxu Section) ecological restoration project covers a total length of 10.44 km. The works include river channel renovation, ecological embankment reconstruction and riparian vegetation restoration. The original river bank soil was loose and vulnerable to water erosion during flood seasons. Traditional rigid concrete revetment damages river ecology and fails to meet modern ecological restoration requirements.

A 3D geomat ecological slope protection solution was adopted for the bank slope below the normal water storage level. During construction, the slope surface was trimmed first. The 3D geomat was laid from top to bottom and fixed with U-shaped nails. The mat was filled with topsoil and sown with native grass seeds. The three-dimensional mesh structure locks topsoil and resists scouring from flood flow. After germination, plant roots penetrate the geomat and interweave with the mesh to form a composite protective layer.

After completion, vegetation coverage on the bank slope increased rapidly. It effectively reduces water erosion of the embankment, improves river self-purification capacity and restores habitats for riparian flora and fauna. Compared with conventional hard revetment, this solution features easy installation and lower cost. It balances flood control safety and ecological landscape, offering a mature reference for ecological treatment of small and medium-sized rivers in northern China.
