Composite Drainage Board Solves Water-logging Risks for Large-Scale Greem Roof Projects

Large‑scale green roofs and rooftop gardens are becoming more and more common in modern green infrastructure. Yet waterlogging remains a major headache for the industry. When rainwater gets trapped in the planting layer, plant roots easily rot, roof waterproof membranes get damaged, and long‑term maintenance costs shoot up. HDPE composite drainage boards (also known as dimpled drainage sheets) are a well‑established material for the drainage layer in green‑roof systems. They combine a dimpled HDPE core with integrated geotextile filter fabric. Laid right above the waterproofing layer, the hollow dimpled cavities create free‑flowing drainage channels. They quickly get rid of excess rainwater and greatly lower the risk of standing water on green roofs. Compared with traditional crushed‑stone drainage layers, these composite drainage boards are much lighter, so they add less load to the roof structure. The bonded geotextile keeps soil from clogging the drainage paths, so the system keeps working efficiently over time. What’s more, they can hold a small amount of water to feed plants through dry spells.
